BigPond and Twitter: A Learning Experience

Seems after the widespread negative response to Australia's first telco jumping on Twitter, BigPond is learning (even if it's the hard way). This week BigPond will further develop the Twitter service by: making the tone of our communications more conversational by removing the ® trademarks and making the tone of our introduction tweets less robotic like. working on changing our profile format so it’s easier for people to contact us. following people that have selected to follow us. How's your experience been?

A Changing Audience

The readers of A Digital Perspective are growing each day, and so is my Twitter following.  As my audience changes on Twitter I've become much more focused with Tweets, and much more mindful of what I'm saying. I've been careless in the past, and I apologise. The audience is encouraging. It's cleansing. And it's making me really start to consider my thoughts, actions and broadcasts. It's making me think smarter, push the envelope and look for new ways to do things. This is change - this is good.

Twitter up 422% in 12 months: We’re gonna need more birds for this whale

With more and more of my office, across various department and disciplines, signing up and logging into the microblogging service -- a number like this comes as no surprise. According to stats just released from Nielsen Online, Twitter recorded 2.3 million unique visitors in August (US-only), an increase of 422% from the same period last year. We've had a lot of conversations here about Twitter -- the most active of these was How did you start on Twitter? which is a question being asked more and more as the online community continues to grow. It is worrying, however, to think about how the ...

How did you begin on Twitter?

A tweet by Evan Smith prompted me to ask the same question.  How did we all find our way onto this microblogging platform. And more importantly - what's making us stay? Me? I was running a forum and was enthralled by Dave Whittle's commentary on Twitter and views on social media. So I went and had a look. I've stayed as an active user because it's a great way for me to connect with colleagues about work, life and the digital world. It's effective and very targeted. Create your own niche. Would love to hear your thoughts on how you got here and why you're ...

Is Twitter worthwhile?

p_berkel: you think its worthwhile signing up? jyesmith: I do. But I talk a lot, and more importantly, I like listening. p_berkel: well listening is where you learn the most jyesmith: like sharing ideas That about sums that up.  @jyesmith

Social Media Update – July

Mashable! today revealed that Facebook plans to launch a redesign (beta) from July 16. ReadWriteWeb discussed Twitter is rumoured to have bought Summize - this could mean big things for Twitter's functionality. If you're ever annoyed when you click on 'mailto:' link on a site, only to have your (redundant) Outlook open, you can now configure Firefox 3 to open GMail or Yahoo via Firefox 3. Great 12 hacks for Firefox 3 article by LinuxAustralia. My Comments: As the web evolves, we're seeing more and more news about social media in the mainstream media (most of it old and outdated), but it's there none-the-less. ...

What is micro-blogging? Lifestreaming

Micro-blogging, and more specifically, micro-blogging services (like Twitter, Jaiku, Plurk) are all forms of lifecasting, also known as lifestreaming. Put simply: Lifestreaming is the continual (or regular) broadcast of one's life and or activities through a digital medium. So what should micro-blogging mean to you? I often get asked about the point of it all, or more recently 'how do I make this useful for me?'.  The question is always asked as if there's something different about me and fellow Twitters that make it useful only for us. That's just wrong. It's up to the user to make this services useful. And ...

Enter the Micro-Blog: Jaiku

So tonight I decided to join (via an invitation from bobcoon - thanks!) Jaiku.  Just going to bash out some points as I enter the Jaiku (the name comes from the phrase Japenese Haikus). Rather than a narrative review of Jaiku (or an overview AKA what the fuck is Jaiku?) Love the colour scheme, big clear lay out Oh, nice, location service built in! Much simpler than brightkite, but perhaps just as practical at this stage as brighkite on mobile in Australia aint happening yet. Enjoying the badges too, brillant little Map mashup in there How do I find my existing friends? No existing ...

MySpace Bulletins

If any of you still float around MySpace (and by float, I mean lurk) still after moving your name to FB, you'll notice that some kids still have a very, very heavy bulletin post rate - these are the people who would be ideal to use something like Twitter. There's 2 girlfriends of mine in particular who continually bulletin, and MySpace's clunky 'click-here-to-see-anything-at-all' interface is a big barrier for me to bother to read beyond the title. As a little experiment, I've suggested Twitter to both of them - although I can already predict their response - "None of my friends use, ...

STUB 2

Thursday was the second "Sydney Twitter Underground Brigade" Twitter meet up. Big thanks to Happener for putting on the drinks and nibbles. Was great to see the Twoddle* offline, and tweeting** with real speech, emotive gestures and LOLs you could hear. Great night. My favourite part was the name tag, and it was soon realised that your username was more important than your real name. *Twoddle: Collective name for group who use Twitter **Tweet: singular item posted on Twitter The video interviews of the night by Scott-Bradley Pearce has been released today. Hope to see you twits at number three. Do you follow ...
