Mobile vs Mobility: 5 questions to ask for your mobile play

When most people talk about mobile, most people think about "smart-phones". But this needs to change. For an industry that has grown-up quicker in Australia than almost anywhere else in the world, we stumble like awkward teenage boys suddenly blessed with strength and height, well before our minds have had a chance to re-connect. Last week I talked a lot about digital story-telling, and touched briefly on the importance of the four screens: Mobile is the future of where content will be accessed – and where stories are heard and re-told.  Furthermore, it is the ubiquity of that content across smart-phones, tablets, laptops ...

Vodafone meets Last.fm: Mobile the clear winner

Just announced: Vodafone and Last.fm today announced a partnerships that will see Vodafone customers to integrate with the social networking music site. This is a great. So where do you get it? The Last.fm application is first available to download from Last.fm at www.last.fm/vodafonescrobbler, to selected Nokia handsets including the N95, N96, N78 and 6210 (other handsets will be available too soon too). This is a great move for Last.fm as I firmly believe that this will make the service not only more accessible but just as or if not more relevant that Apple's Genius.  The key problem with Genius is the fact ...

What is a QR Code? What can they offer your business?

You may have noticed with the recent design updates to the site, I've also incorporated 2 QR codes on site (one for mobile, and one for standard).  So I thought I should explain what these are, and also where to get one for your own site. So what is a QR Code? A QR Code is a matrix code (or 2D bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.  There are a number of features that sets ...

Open Source Mobile Operating System

Watch this space: What is really about to get interesting, and perhaps not as marketable as the iPhone, is the emergence of open-source mobile operating systems. I'd camp out for those. Between Android, Nokia, and the media noticing.  We're in for some innovative stuff.

iPhone: A Bad Horror Movie

Catching up on some RSS today - came across a quick article from Forbes, with some very colourful analogies, and a picture gallery featuring phones that might (although I didn't agree, save the Android) be a threat to Apple. Here's 4 tasty quotes about some perspectives on the iPhone: It's like a scene from a bad horror movie. Samsung and Research in Motion are among the companies trundling down the steps into the basement. And down there, waiting for them, is Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs and his chainsaw collection. Dudes, don't go down there. .... The biggest reason? Apple has caused a ...

iPhone in Australia

Is it the great phone revolution of all time? Fuck no. I was trying my best to avoid discussing the iPhone. Why? Because people are excited about the iPhone (officially) hitting our shores for all the wrong reasons. But I was prompted this morning by a great post (read: rant) about the marketing hype (read: inane fanboyism) surrounding the iPhone launch in Australia. Scott makes the point that this is just another piece of consumer electronics than we (me included) will purchase just for it to be replaced in the future - so why bother with all the fuss? Quick facts ...

Nokia e61i

I did it. I finally did it. I bought the Nokia e61i. So far loving it. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great PDA that doesn’t become a totally useless phone. The Nokia’s Symbian OS has a vast range of applications to meet the desires of anyone who feels they miss WM 5.0. So here are my first impressions. Top application: Mail for Exchange Great functionality, on & off user-generated peak times All the additional applications are handily pre-loaded on the mem card (which is a Micro slot) and you just install the ones you want For you CrackBerry ...
