Fiji: Censorship of the Media

After the Fijian consitution was thrown out over the weekend, the new military government now have censors which control the media.  Even as far as having police officers in the news room with journalists.

This is a quick reach to any Fijian bloggers and non-mainstream writers and story tellers who might be still able to make their voice heard.

In breif the military crackdown is  ‘a 30-day state of emergency, newspapers and broadcasters are not allowed to carry stories critical of the army’s grip on power in Fiji’.  Australian journalists Sean Dorney and other Fijian press have all backlashed against the movement.

Do you think maybe one day miltiary actions like this may be able to extend over other publishing channels? Should they follow by the government’s commands? Is it illegal if they don’t?

If you know a bloger, vlogger, Tweeter – any social media, online channel author – let me know. Or if you’re an Australian journalist, would very much like to hear your opinion on the matter.
